How to LED reverse lights

Installing LED fog/driving lights as aux reverse lights.

I know a lot of you can do this sorta thing standing on your head while drinking a beer, this is for those that might not be so good at the drinking part ;)

I do not recommend doing it this way with incandescent/halogen fog/driving lights, they draw to much power. You should use a relay with a dedicated power wire in that case.

Skill level:

Anyone

Time:

1-2 hrs.

Tools:

Crimp connector tool

Wire strippers

Drill

Drill bits

Hack saw

Wrenches/sockets

Screw drivers

Materials:

1"x1/8" aluminum bar stock

(Blue) butt connectors (16-14 ga.)

(Red) ring terminals (22-18 ga)

#8 stainless steel sheet metal or self tapper screws

Zip ties

Electrical tape

You can get all of this including any tools you need at HD, Lowes or most any hardware store.

Note: Make sure you drill the right size holes for your screws, stainless steel is soft and with snap if the hole is to small. If you hold the drill bit over the screw, you should just be able to see the threads of the screws.

Getting started:

Note: Place them back 4-5" from the face of the bumper, this should protect them from a short little car nosing under your bumper and hitting one of your lights, don't ask me how I know this :|

First decide where you want your lights to sit, make sure you have clearance to access all the fasteners associated with your lights.

Mine just clear the tow hitch bar with enough room to adjust/aim them left/right

Start out laying out your bracket. Verify these measurements work for your application.

2 pieces of bar stock 4" long should be about right (don't cut them yet) Mark a center line length wise, measure in 1/4" from one end and mark, and another mark from the same end at 2 1/4" mark, from the other end measure in 1/2" Drill a 5/32 to 3/16" hole at your first two marks, (1/4 and 2 1/4) the renaming hole is to mount your light bracket, drill it slightly bigger then the mounting bolt included with your lights. Verify these numbers work in your application, adjust if need be. Now cut your pieces, you can use the holes you've drilled to screw the bar stock to your bench or block of wood to hold it while your cutting it. (I had this .1875x1.5" bar stock on hand, it's over kill)

The larger hole is facing towards the front of the truck.

Now the wiring:

Note: lowering the spare will give you more room to work

Find and trace the wire loom coming down through the bed floor right below your tail lights.

In an 06 GMC the reverse wire is light green, being GM there's a good chance it is light green for newer and older Gens as well, but be sure and google " wiring schematic" for your truck, no need to be patching wires back together.
I un-did some of the wire loom clips to get the wire down to where I could get at it better. Pull some of the wire free from the wire loom in the location you want to splice in, cut your reverse wire and add in your aux light wire using a blue butt connector.

Ignore my white wire, I added that in for a upcoming project.
push the wires back into the wire loom, the loom is just big enough to get the butt connector in on the pass. side, but not the drivers side. Close it up with some electrical tape.
