Adding driver door open warning lights

Interior Upgrade / Interior Lighting written by @Geezer1 Toyota Sienna 2014

While I'm messing with adding additional BSM indicators in the interior, I decided it is a good time to add an MIT warning light that illuminates/flashes when the driver door is open. I should call this the "Cupini's mod" since one of the most dangerous driving related acts we do on a regular basis is to parallel park in front of Cupini's restaurant on Kansas City's very busy Westport Road. Getting out on the driver side can be a challenge as traffic whizzes by.

On a side note, when Guy Fieri on his Food Network program asked restaurant owner Franco Cupini how he got all the way from Italy to Kansas City, Franco's reply was something like "Mainly by doing the backstroke." Franco's a fungi.

All three product versions come with an LED warning light for each front door. Since our Sienna Limited and Prius v Five have identical door courtesy lights and since the safety issue is almost entirely on the driver side, I'm going to "split the product" and install an LED warning light only on the driver side front doors of our Sienna and Prius.

I ordered the first of the following three versions.

1) "MIT TOYOTA PRIUS 2010-15 LED door open warning lights anniunciation flash lamps" - While listed as fitting the Prius, it fits gen 3 Sienna that have courtesy lights in the front doors, i.e. XLE, Limited. It is plug-and-play to the door courtesy light connector. Price is $34.93.

2) "MIT TOYOTA SIENNA 2010-on LED door open warning lights SAFETY flash lamps" - This version is for Sienna that have red reflectors instead of front door courtesy lights. It includes some fairly extensive wiring harnesses and is not close to plug-and-play. Price is $49.90.

3) "MIT TOYOTA SIENNA 2010-on LED door open warning SAFETY+Courtesy welcome lights" - This version is for Sienna that have red reflectors instead of front door courtesy lights. It includes the door courtesy light units for replacing the red reflectors. Also not plug-and-play. Price is $59.42.

I assume installation will require removing the door panels ... have previously done it on the Prius and assume the procedure will be the same on the Sienna.

The estimated delivery window is rather large - two to eight weeks! I'll post photos when I do the installation.

Finally, here is a link to a YouTube video that shows the door open warning lights in action. I don't think the plug-and-pay version will work on our Sienna and Prius as shown in the video since the LED warning light will turn off when the driver door is closed. I'm guessing that the video shows the version that requires the extensive wiring since the LED warning light remains on when the front door is closed and a sliding door is open.
