When I bought my truck, the dealer threw in a Chevy hitch cover. It did the job it needed to, but I always thought it was cheap looking. I saved the old hitch cover from my 97' Silverado that I traded in. It was a Captain Zooms hitch cover that had a black bow tie surround made of plexiglass inserted into the billet aluminum. It was in bad shape and the silver outline paint was flaking under the plexiglass. Captain Zooms was apparently a Cali speed shop that sold lots of stuff like this,
So I had this thing sitting around and finally decided I wanted to pop out that plexi and polish it up some. This thing is a beefy piece of aluminum with a solid receiver piece welded onto it. Can't find stuff like this anymore and I think I found it at a garage sale or craigslist?
I used my dremel tool and chemicals to get rid of the glue and paint. Then I used a few grits of sand paper and 00 steel wool. I hand polished it in several stages with Mothers polish.
It is NOT perfect and you can still see some scratches and CNC marks. That is the way I wanted it. I want it to tell a story and show it's been around and used, I thought about adding a carbon fiber insert(I have a bunch laying around), but I think I like it as is.
Guarantee no on else has one like it! Thinking about doing a brushed satin look inside with some light sandpaper sweeps?
