BASIC answers for Newbys lifting ZJ / which parts (sticky?)

This is going to be VERY basic for newbies trying to figure what they need and what kits best. OK here's the best I can do for you. #1, you COULD just put 4inch springs front and back with longer shocks. (or even just the front and do F>R) anyway, that will lift your grand 4 inches. Just remove the bolt securing the brake line brackets and they'll be long enough. (you can upgrade to Stainless brake lines but don't NEED to) #2 NOW having said that, your axles will move off center (because as you lift the jeep up your track bar mounts on the axle end move as the trac bar cant get longer so it gets pulled sideways (make sense). So if you WANT to fix that (most do) you'll get adj, track bars, (notice i didn't say NEED) or a rear bracket will work.#3 Also as you go UP the axles will become closer the the body (fire wall in front, Rear door in back) this is because of the control arms are only so long, so as the body goes higher, they are pulled inward. SO if you WANT to fix this, (most do, some don't) you'll need LONGER control arms. Notice i didn't say adjustable. They are a luxury so to speak, they will allow you to fine tune your caster / pinion angle, and axle placement. So fixed length will do, adjustable is nice, rubber bushings are fine, flex joints are nice. #4 Sway bar can be used with just the longer end links, but articulation will suffer, if you WANT to fix this get Disconnects. You don't NEED them. And some just remove the rear sway bar (hardly noticed on road). So basically the only thing you NEED for a 4inch lift is the Springs and shocks, the others you can pick what you can live with and what you want to upgrade. I hope this helps, its as basic as i can get.

So to answer about which lift kit to get, it's up to you. The most basic kits are longer coils and shocks. As you upgrade more, the cost goes up accordingly. So if you want a pretty decent kit, coils and shocks,2 lower control arms, and front track bar / rear bracket will work. IF you want / can afford more, do one with all 8 ADJ control arms, front AND rear trac bars, disconnects and brake lines. IF you want / can afford more, go up to a long arm kit. Just know that the higher you go/ bigger tires, you'll need to upgrade axles accordingly. Adam
