Installed a CarPlay head unit in my 2017 Sienna non-nav non-JBL

I recently upgraded the headunit of my wife's 2013 Highlander to an Apple CarPlay-compatible unit (Sony XAV-AX100) and I decided I also wanted CarPlay. Information was kinda sparse on installing an aftermarket HU in a Sienna, so I thought I'd at least add a datapoint for anyone in the future looking how to do it.

Equipment:

  • idatalink Maestro RR
  • idatalink Maestro HRN-RR-TO2
  • Scosche TA2120B dash kit
  • PAC USB-TY1 factory USB retention adapter
  • Metra 40-LX11 antenna adapter
    Pioneer AVH-2330NEX

I wired the Maestro harness to the 2330NEX's, flashed the right firmware on the Maestro unit (note: on windows 10, you have to use Internet Explorer - not Chrome/Firefox/EDGE) and that was pretty much it. You can customize your steering wheel controls prior to flashing the firmware on the Maestro unit, but I just left the defaults. All buttons function AFAIK - I'll update this if I find one that doesn't.

One nice thing is that the Scosche unit is totally self-contained - you don't need to remove the factory brackets off the OEM radio, the Scoche unit aligns with the 4 10MM bolt holes perfectly that hold the radio in place.
