I had a replacement key made for my car at a dealer or a while ago. I highly recommend doing that by the way, not to have keys to drive with, but to have a key to make good copies of.
While I was there, I asked about a replacement remote control, in case I lost or broke mine. They told me, it would be around $300, but it was no longer available. Basically, if my remote broke or was lost, I would be unable to replace it.
Naturally I started thinking if I see a good remote that works with my car, I should just get it to have a spare.
I then happened to be getting an unrelated part from Honda Parts Cheap, and as I usually do when I happen to be there anyway, I just started browsing through their catalog for other interesting parts. The remote, indeed, was unavailable on their site...if you look in the combination switch section where the key blanks are also listed.
Eyes popping out of my head at seeing this, I did some quick math and figured the set with two remotes cost a lot less than twice what the single remote does (and both were significantly less than what I was quoted at the dealer), and ordered the set of two immediately.
Actually, I also put the part number into eBay to see if anybody had one, but cheaper. There are a couple of Honda dealers still selling them on eBay too, but they're actually more expensive.
Anyway, a week after ordering the new remotes, I get this showing up in the mail.
I hooked them both up, and they both work perfectly! The procedure to program them to the car, is not only really simple, it is also included in the instructions that come with the remotes.
I use the remote on my car all the time, so this is just really awesome to be able to get extras. I'm posting this so that you guys can follow my example get remotes for your cars if you want to.
There were a couple of fitment notes. The remotes I got say that they will fit all CR-V models from 97 and 98 (except the Suzuka models, whatever that means), and LX models from 2001. The single remote says it will fit all CR-V models (except Suzuka) from 97, 98, and 99. I think it is likely that both remotes will fit all the CR-Vs from 97 through 2001, but I would not say that's completely certain unless somebody decides to try it, and it works.
