Back in Feb the compressor was making some loud noises (~65k on it). Was still cooling but wasn't needed much at the time. Figured the compressor was on the way out so ordered an OEM replacement ($750 ouch). Finally noticed the AC had stopped working and a week later made time to look at the system. Found a leak at the compressor's top connector O ring.
Replaced with AC specific O ring and refilled system. The compressor kicked in with the same loudness as before but quieted down after about 10 seconds. While finishing the fill the compressor then started back up with the bad sounds and wasn't cooling effectively. At that point made the decision to pull the compressor. Not too difficult with someone else helping to de-tension the belt. Then it's just a handful of bolts to remove it.
The OEM replacement compressor came with a clutch and had oil in it. After replacement and refilling all is well with the world. For those looking to do the same job would recommend buying ahead of time both the O rings for the connectors to the compressor and possibly a replacement accessory belt. Friend supplied the vacuum pump and valving kit to help drain/fill the system.
AC failed again today. No pressure in the line so clutch won't even engage on the compressor. Could not locate a leak but did spot a significant leak from the top right (driver side) of the radiator. Doesn't look to be a hose but possibly an issue with the plastic end tank failing. Decided to take it into the dealer to have them fix it as I didn't want to risk overheating the car until I could look at it on the weekend. Sigh...
Well, dealer reported back that my radiator pressure tested out just fine. Apparently what I thought was a radiator leak was really all the AC coolant rapidly coming out from the high pressure connection on the compressor. We used some AC O rings from a generic multi-size kit instead of the specific Subaru parts and the one on the high pressure size was just close enough to work for a few weeks before failing... Doh!
