Dodge Dakota Engine swap: Preparing the powertrain

Performance Modifications / Engine Rebuild written by @RXT Dodge Dakota 1999

After the axles were completed, the attention went back to the engine. The engine and transmission were initially installed, to get the final resting position set. New engine brackets were welded onto the frame, and once set, the engine was once agin removed to be torn down and inspected, while the transmission was shipped off to a transmission shop for a rebuild.

Taken apart and inspected. The head was fine, there were no cracks found anywhere, the cylinders still had a cross hatch pattern in the bores. But a problem was found. At this point we were going to tab in the dowel pin (KDP repair) to prevent it from falling out…but we were too late. The pin had fallen out and caused some damage, before I got the engine. The gear case was severely gouged and a tooth on one of the gears was chipped. We never did find the pin, but there was evidence that the oil pan had been removed at some point. Well the gear was still serviceable and stayed in the engine, and the gouged gear case didn't leak, so it was retained too. We did install a new dowel pin and tabbed it in place. Other than this minor issue, the engine was in great shape and put back together complete with a new paint job.

^ This is the port side of the reassembled engine. Now was the time to install a few performance parts. The injector pump got a new M&H M3 fuel pin, a 3200rpm governor spring kit and a dynamic timing device.

Starboard side of the engine received a new set of DAP 5X.012 injectors and a big HE351CW turbo
