Broken oil filter bypass valve

Incidents & Traffic / Sudden Breakdown written by @Freedom_JK Freedom Edition Wrangler JK Unlimited (Jeep Wrangler 2013)

I was changing the oil last week in my 2013 JKU and when I pulled out the oil filter I could hear something rattling around in the filter.

I found a black plastic piece in the hollow center of the filter. This was not normal so I searched in the filter housing and found that the oil filter bypass valve had broken.

I did not know much about the part so I searched on-line and luckily found that Dorman makes a replacement bypass valve.

Mopar does not sell just a bypass valve. Without Dorman selling this part, you would have to replace the entire filter housing and oil cooler which is expensive and a royal pain in the butt to replace.

Luckily the local Advanced Auto Parts store had the Dorman part in stock and it is very easy to install. So if anyone finds this part is broken when changing the oil it is Dorman part no. 917-992.
