Gas cap broke while on Jeep

Last week, I stopped at a gas station to fill up at 5:30 pm, the night before I was leaving on a 20 hour drive to Colorado.

I went to remove the gas cap and the ratcheting mechanism in the gas cap had broken and the cap would just spin when I tried to loosen it. Not a good thing when I was about to leave on a very long road trip. I went to a O'Reilly Auto Parts store and they had a replacement gas cap.

Luckily, because the stock gas caps are so cheaply made, I was able to just pull the thing apart with my bare hands. The white threaded portion of the gas cap stayed in the filler neck and I was able to put a screw driver into one of the ratcheting tabs and tap on it to get the threaded portion to turn lose.

The replacement gas cap feels sooo much better constructed. In nearly 30 years of driving, I have never had a gas cap break.
