Doubled rear hatch courtesy lighting

Bought a used hatch light off eBay for $29 shipped. Popped the blank panel out of the driver side of the hatch. Disassembled the used light (it’s 4 pieces including surface surround, and all held together with side clips). Laid the used panel face down on my blank as a reverse template and marked square with a liquid chalk marker. Dremeled the square out and dry fit the light surround. I thought I’d need to thin the area for the surround to counter sink like the OEM panel, but it’s such thin plastic, it’s not necessary. Shot a couple of coats of flat black paint on the surround ring.

The light is 4-pin, but only the middle two are used in the OEM plug. I found a 2-pin connector I had fit perfectly. Glued the surround ring to my dremeled OEM panel, straightened out a coat hanger with a hook on the end and fished the wires across without removing the panel. Used t-taps, checked connections, then popped it all back together.

I used the beige panel b/c it was the cheapest one listed. Obviously, if I’d bought a black one I’d have saved the spray paint step. The OEM trim ring installs with friction. Since the dremeled hole wasn’t an exact size, I put a bead of glue around the ring, placed it on the panel and let it dry over night.

Really pleased with the results and look forward to checking it out in the dark.
